My White Coat.
I always use to ask my seniors that why it is mandatory for us to wear white coat & the answer was easy recognition by colleagues & patients.This reason couldn’t convince me, so wearing white coat became a liability, is it so that white coat is just for show off or just to discrete us from other citizens?
Thick white coat , was it really needed & how to forget those challenges with it;
- So uncomfortable to wear it whole day especially during hot summer
- White is colour of cleanliness but when same white coat gets stained with inking pen or blood it gives us untidy look
- Very difficult to wash & maintain.
Than why was white coat selected for our profession; in which we have to daily deal with patients, at times soaked in blood & other body discharges to handle while dressing the wound, Ryle’s tube insertion, Foley's catheterization & many many more?
While going through an article I came out with few conclusion,
Reason For wearing a white coat;
* Easy recognition by colleagues & patients due to continuity of dress
* Carrying items in the pocket
* Keeping clothes clean.
* Emphasizing doctor status
* I have to/'it is expected’
* Preventing own contamination
*A symbol of cleanliness
* Preventing patient contamination
* Keeping warm
* A psychological barrier
* Other reasons
